Week two (5/15) of my first semester of PH 108: DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY with John Trefethen

Shoot the same scene at three different times of day. Please capture as close to the same scene for all images. You need to use a tripod and mark where you positioned it so that you can return to the same location several hours later. This is a test and I will be looking close at the various qualities of natural light throughout the day.

  1. Morning

  2. Afternoon

  3. Evening

1. was taken at 8:14 a. m.

ISO - 400

Focal Length - 80mm

Aperture – f/5.6

Exposure Time – 1/1250

2. was taken at 1:09 p. m.

ISO - 400

Focal Length - 80mm

Aperture – f/5.6

Exposure Time – 1/1600

3. was taken at 6:45 p. m.

ISO - 400

Focal Length - 80mm

Aperture – f/5.6

Exposure Time – 1/200

Do you find that you enjoy working more with natural light or artificial light? (For most of you artificial light in this case means flash on camera.)

Do you prefer specular or diffused light?

I don’t think that I prefer any particular lighting. I think that studio lighting offers more options. I like dramatic light and sometimes these effects can only be done with artificial light. I think that both artificial and natural light offer something special and worthwhile to a photograph.

If I had to choose, I would probably lean to artificial lighting because of the control it offers.
