Parallels

Parallels is a comparison of like items through the lens of a plastic camera. In many cases this is the old version of the item compared with the modern version. I set out on this journey with a Holga film camera, 120 film and a film mask. I shot the first set of images on one side of the film frame; at the end of the roll, I pulled the film, rewound it, flipped the mask, reloaded the film and shot the same frames again. This process allowed for a natural compare and contrast between the two images living side by side. The viewer is instantly able to draw parallels between the two images.

This process could be done in the computer with digital images, true, but with the Holga and film there is a rawness to the capturing of the images. The dreamy quality that takes the modern versions out of the context that we associate with them everyday and puts them on the same plane as their older counterparts. During the process my paper mask shifted and tore, got taped back together and took on a life of its own, it ended up creating an interesting double exposure in my later images. This project is in no way complete. This is an ongoing project that will develop over time.
