Week two (4/15) of my first semester of PH 108: DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY with John Trefethen
The most difficult lighting situations in which to photograph tend to be high in contrast (harsh light) or extremes (very bright or low light). For this assignment, make creative use of a tough lighting situation while experimenting with your histogram and bracketing to achieve an exposure that best utilizes that light. Pay special attention to how highlight and shadow function in your image; make sure they work with (rather than against) your subject. Some examples of lighting situations yielding harsh light include midday on a sunny day, backlit, wet, or shiny subjects in bright light, and compositions that include a light source in the frame.
What are some creative uses for motion blur?
Capturing the motion of a carnival ride, or the drama of a race.
What is an example of when you would want to use a faster shutter speed and why?
You would use a fast shutter when you want to stop motion, freezing that moment in time.
What about a small depth of field?
You will use a small depth of field when you want to isolate your subject by letting the background fall away.
Why would you ever use f/22?
Shooting into direct sunlight, where too much light passes through the lens could damage the sensor.
