Week one (4/15) of my first semester of PH 100: FUNDAMENTALS OF PHOTOGRAPHY with Andrea Land

Create an indoor portrait using natural light. Please consider the information found in the module on the topic of light. Consider the contrast, mood, and quality of light. Some may want to use a reflector as a fill light.

My family is spending a lot of time in the hospital the last few days. Which changed my initial idea that I would use the window at home and do this and that....

Yesterday, my uncle came to visit and the windows of the hospital has a lot of great light my favorite shot will probably be considered overexposed. This photo, however, could not better tell the story of him and I love how the light is filtered through his beard. I also love how the light washes out the blinds around his arms. I think it adds an edge to the "old" biker.

Please write an essay that describes your understanding of the different types of light as well as your understanding of the different types of contrasts we've talked about. Please be specific in your descriptions. Research some photographers you've learned about and upload from their work at least one example of one type of light you discuss.

First I think I learned about light is that there is no “bad light,” only “good light” based on the photographer’s intent. The photographer’s vision for their work will greatly influence the time of day they will choose for their photo. The weather conditions they are willing to shoot in will, also, play a big role.

If they are looking for a soft photo with little contrast. Most likely the photographer will choose early morn or early evening. This soft light will also be available during overcast or foggy weather. The reason being, the diffused nature of the light.

Now, if the photographer wants strong contrast and shadow, they will want full sun. The brighter the sunlight the better for this style of shots. Midday sun offers an exaggeration of these features.

When I think of natural light photography I think of Ansel Adams. I also think of Imogen Cunningham. Both are beautiful artist of natural light. (their work is what I will share with you). I have included an example of hard and soft light for each artist.
